Zest Marathon Challenge - Tues 1st March

One of the nice perks to being a Zesty blogger is that I occasionally get my dirty mitts on beauty products to test – and on the day Dr Bronner’s Organic range came my way, I had some very dirty mitts indeed.

I’d decided to extend Saturday’s long run into a 13.1 miler, basically running a half-marathon by myself, for no good reason at all. And I managed it! Almost.

In fact, my Garmin cut out after 12.8 miles, but by then I was just proud to still be out there: I’d been rained on, thundered at, bogged down in mud and pelted by windswept bits of gravel. Knock-kneed and bent double, I limped home, really feeling like Jack Frost was nipping at my toes - with a pair of bolt cutters. And when I got into the shower, I couldn’t tell if my nerve endings were screaming at me because the water was freezing cold or boiling hot, until I tested it with my tongue. It was lukewarm.

Summing it all up, I wasn’t having a good day. But as the liquid soap frothed in my hand, it gave out a sharp pepperminty smell that relaxed me – a little – and cut through the smell of sweat as quickly as it dispatched the caked-on dirt all over my legs. I followed it up with a squirt of Dr Bronner’s skin lotion. It’s a bit of a shame that the creamy, peppermintiness of it put me firmly in mind of crème de menthe but I didn’t particularly mind smelling like the liquor cabinet from Abigail’s Party: my skin was clean, soft and well-nourished. My overall mood was good. And even better - I knew tomorrow was a rest day.
