The final week...
This week's classes included a Step and Tone class, which I really enjoyed - but was glad I'd done a lot of Step classes in the past or I might have struggled to keep up. The last 15 minutes of the class involved using a barbell to tone up, which was a great idea to complement the aerobics we'd done, and meant I left feeling I'd had a total-body workout.
I also tried TRX. Straps hang from the ceiling and you alter the length depending on the exercise you're doing. We made the straps long, then put our feet in them to give us extra resistance for planks (ouch!), or made them shorter and leant forward on them to do standing press-ups. These moves were interspersed with quick aerobic blasts, such as sprinting on the spot for 60 seconds, to ensure our hearts got pumping, too. TRX would be a great option if you were short on time but still wanted an intense workout.
I also gave pole dancing a go. If I'm honest, I signed up for this one because it sounded fun and I thought it'd be quite easy. Oh how wrong I was! The instructor and other long-termers in the class made the various exercises look easy but when I tried, I could barely lift myself off the floor, nevermind do any of the more elaborate moves. It was so much harder than I expected and I couldn't fight the natural instinct to grip the pole with the soles of my feet like a monkey! Members of the Zest Facebook page had tried to warn me to expect aches and bruising and they weren't wrong! My arms hurt for days afterwards and my legs were covered in bruises from where I'd bashed into the pole so much. This would be a great activity for building upper-body strength and toning your arms, but I think it'd take me a good few sessions to master the technique before I could focus on the benefits!
