Music, views...mushrooms? What takes your mind off the pain when running?

mushrooms The prized porcini I spotted while out running this morning

So, I'm on week 2 of the training plan and I was doing my ten minute run, two min walk bit this morning. It was a lovely sunny morning, so I thought I'd take the route through my local woods and over the common. The ten min run there was hard going as uphill (by the way, has anyone else noticed that roads you thought of as flat when you drive along them suddenly take on Kilimanjaro proportions now you're running?), so I was glad of the two min walk bit to catch my breath. But while I was walking along, I caught a glimpse of something in the undergrowth. Nooo, nothing like that! It was a mushroom!

I should explain that I have a slightly nerdy obsession with mushrooms ever since going on a foraging course. So anyway, I could tell that this was not just any mushroom, it was the mushroom - a much sought-after porcini. Cue quick mental calculation - was anyone else around to spot it, could I feasibly pick it and then run home holding it without damaging it, and, err, looking like a weirdo. Then, woohoo!, I spotted another one.

Decision made (I couldn't run holding two - and there might be more!), I covered them up with leaves, and started to run home. I realise it's downhill, but I swear I've never found running so easy - I must have done it in half the time.

Anyway, I got home, grabbed my mushroom basket and knife, and headed back up there. I've just got back with my bumper shrooming haul, which I'll cook up for tea.

If only there was the promise of prized wild mushrooms to take my mind off every hill - I reckon I'd have that 10k done in no time at all!

So, iPod, mushrooms, nice views - what takes your mind off the pain while you're running?

Wow, those mushrooms look great, what a treat for completing your training. I decided to walk/jog around my local country park for a change of scenery yesterday. However, I managed to get a bit lost (actually, a lot lost). This certainly took my mind of the pain and also meant that I pushed myself further, as it took another 20minutes to find my way back to the car. I don't necessarily reccommend this as a distraction technique though!

Hi Kate, you're a week ahead of me but I just did day three (two lots of seven minutes with walking in between). For day three, week one (cast your mind back, this probably seems ages ago!) both the running and the walking are meant to be at level two. Is there a difference between level two walking and level two running? I just went for keeping going on the running, without trying to speed up too much (my dog lapped me several times and clearly thinks I am bonkers).

Am I looking forward to a full 15 minutes on Sunday? Erm, not so much ... :-)

Oh, and - running distractions. Trying to find enough breath to call back Dylan the Jack Russell, my running companion! I'm pretty slow compared to him and sadly he doesn't seem motivated to look for mushrooms. I wish :-)

Ha ha, Tracey. I'll have to try the 'lost' technique! Actually, I do find that varying the route seems to help distract me, though.

Dorset Girl - the effort levels scale runs from 1 to 10, with 1 being the easiest. At level 6 you should be slightly of breath, at 7 you should be out of breath but able to hold a conversation a few words at a time, but by level 9 you need all your breath just to run. To be honest, I find I only have two levels - walking and fine, or running, which seems to always be effort level 9 for me as there's no way I can run and talk!
