We like to think of ourselves as pretty fit here at Zest HQ, but triathlons still feel a bit daunting. Can a training sesh with former GB triathlete Rob Turner change Web Ed Nicola's mind?
A former GB Triathlete and adventure racer, Rob Turner's alter ego is 'Mountain Man'. On his business card is an image of him suspended in mid-air by a rope. Is this a man you'd choose to put you through a training session?
My fears are allayed when soft-spoken tough guy Rob starts talking me through his triathlon prep programme, based at Stars Gym in Battersea, south London.
'If you're a beginner, aiming to compete in your first triathlon, start with something manageable. Choose a sprint - it's a manageable distance and often the swim takes place in a pool,' Rob advises.
Reassuring words, as for many (including myself) the open water swim is the main deterrent to signing up for a tri.
So what about Rob - what's his weakest discipline? 'The swim,' he admits. 'It's quite technically difficult and can be daunting. I would recommend doing swimming drills to boost your skill and confidence.
'The key to preparing for a triathlon is identify your weakest discipline, be it swimming, running or cycling, and concentrate your efforts on that.'
OK. Time to train. Thankfully we're not swimming today, but focusing on running and cycling.
Our hour-long session kicks off with a warm-up on the bike at Stars Gym followed by intervals work on the treadmill.
Swapping between bike and treadmill, with Rob advising on effort levels and ensuring I and my fellow triathlon trainee (who took part in a jaw-dropping six triathlons last year) keep our heart rates in the right zone for maximum effect, means the time flies and soon we're into the welcome cooldown stretching zone.
Has it convinced me that triathlon is in my sights? Well, I could do the run and the bike ride but as for donning a wet suit and ploughing my way across a lake with hundreds of other swimmers? Not sure I'm quite ready for that yet....
Rob Turner runs a twice-weekly programme of triathlon training at Stars Gym.
