Grab your AB-MXR and prepare to shift the flab! That was the message from PT Joanna Kabbani, inventor of the AB-MXR abs cruncher, when she led us in a fitness masterclass to introduce us to the device.

Did we like it? Yes! Certainly enough to check in for a home workout later.

How does it work? The AB-MXR is an abdominal exercise device designed to focus your efforts in the right place, helping you build a more toned core with a greatly reduced risk of injury. It's portable, easy to use and comes with a DVD and fitness poster that make for a ready-made workout.

Joanna designed it after a neck injury meant that normal crunches and sit-ups became risky for her. By holding the AB-MXR behind your neck, you support your neck and focus lifts on your abdominal muscles rather than on your neck, which can happen.

But it's not all about the crunch. Our class also focused on cardio work - using the AB-MXR as a weight while performing squats, twists, lunges and bicep curls. It was fast and furious - great fun and totally effective. Glutes, abs and biceps all experienced a healthy ache the next day.

Definitely worth considering for your armoury of fitness equipment - a welcome change from weights and kettlebells. And look out for AB-MXR classes possibly coming to a gym near you one day soon...
