We're a nation of animal lovers, so if you fancy setting yourself a fitness challenge this spring, why not do one that will raise much-needed funds for our four-leggedfriends? Battersea Dogs & Cats home are looking for people to raise money for it by running this year's Bupa London 10K on 27 May – and has a whole host of tips for training with your pet!

Since it was founded back in 1860,Battersea has rescued, reunited and rehomed over 3.1 million dogs and cats all over the UK, but with no government funding, it relies soleyon the generosity and support of the public to pay the £13.5 million it costs per year to help care for lost and abandoned dogs and cats.

Fitness fans with either two or four legs can get in shape together with some top tips from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home on how you and your pet can stay safe when taking that lap around the park.

Battersea’s top tips on running with your dog:

  • Never make your dog run faster than they are able to.
  • Take plenty of water for both you and your dog.
  • Take regular breaks if necessary.
  • If your dog is not used to running on a regular basis, gradually introduce the faster pace to their walks in short intervals.
  • Consider putting a harness on your dog to ensure their comfort and safety.
  • Make sure you stay aware of what your dog is doing and do not get lost in your own activity.
  • If you dog begins to pant, take a break and give them some water.
  • Your dog should be fit, healthy and well enough to take part in this form of exercise. If your dog has any medical conditions which could be affected by running, speak to your vet first.
