Getting your beauty sleep may be more than just a manner of speech, according to new research by Swedish scientists. Boffins from the Karolinksa Institute photographed healthy volunteers, aged 18 to 31, first after eight hours of sleep and again after being kept awake for 31 hours straight. Observers were showed the photos and asked to rank volunteers on how healthy, attractive and sleep-deprived they look. The short of sleep were rated not only less attractive, but unhealthier looking as well.
ZEST SAYS: Unfortunately, it may take more than a good night's rest to become Britain's Next Top Model. The control group for this study was extremely small - only 23 people participated - and comprised of young people whose looks may not be as affected by lack of sleep as those over 31. Nonetheless, this study was printed in the British Medical Journal, adding weight to its authority. Plus, it joins a long list of research confirming how important a full night's sleep is to health, longevity and emotional wellbeing. Everything from weight to memory is negatively affected by lack of sleep. The important thing to take from this research is to make eight hours a night a priority. You may look better, and you'll definitely feel better.
