Cleopatra's Royal Bath at Antara Spa is a rejuvenating and relaxing treatment designed to make you feel like pure royalty
Legend has it Egyptian queen Cleopatra was only allowed out of her palace once a year - on her birthday. The whole nation would celebrate the day, filling the lakes and rivers with candles and rose petals in her honour. When the hot wax from the candles mixed with the petal water, rose oil would form and women would massage the solution into their skin in an attempt to be as beautiful as Cleopatra herself.
This romantic story is the reason for my visit to the Antara spa at the Chelsea Club. They've created the ultimate in indulgent spa treatments, Cleopatra's Royal Bath. The 90-minute treatment is all about making you feel as pampered as Cleo on her special day.
Beginning with a warm foot soak and herbal tea, I start to relax in the candle lit room, designed specifically for this treatment. After a few minutes, the therapist asks me to lie on a heated marble table that's solid but comfortable. And when my lower back starts to get a bit stiff, he pops a folded towel under it to alleviate any tension.
Starting with a deep exfoliation using a sea salt and rose oil mixture, he sloughs off dead skin with a textured mitt. It's the most intense exfoliation I've had but isn't painful in the slightest. I feel my skin getting smoother with every stroke.
Next I step into a 47-degree steam room for ten minutes of solitude. The therapist leaves me to myself with a cool towel, a bowl of ice and a glass of cold water. A burning candle and twinkling lights on the ceiling are the only source of light, and I'm able to fully let go and relax into the experience.
When he opens the door, a refreshing rush of cool air gets me ready for a European mud masque, meant to condition my newly smoothed skin. And when it's time to rinse the masque off, I don't have to lift a finger thanks to the waterproof marble table. I doubt even Princess Kate gets this kind of treatment.
One more stint in the steam room and it's time for the last and most relaxing part of the treatment - a total body warm oil massage and fingertip facial. I try not to doze off to make sure I enjoy every second, but eventually slip into a light slumber only to awake when an uplifting scented oil is wafted under my nose. I'm feeling smooth, calm and completely refreshed. Like a queen, in fact.
Back in the Chelsea Club, I decide to use my newly acquitted energy on a whiz around the outdoor running track that surrounds the fitness centre. Complete with TRX machines, yoga studio and fully stocked free weight area, there's something in the gym for every fittie. Plus, I love that the lap pool and Jacuzzi won't turn my blonde hair green or dry out my hydrated skin - they've got a minimal chlorine levels, thanks to an extra strength water filter.
By the time I wave goodbye to Antara Spa and the Chelsea Club, I feel utterly pampered. With a variety of Ayurvedic, Oriental and traditional spa treatments, as well as couple and partner experiences, there's something here for everyone. And with a spa treatment, you'll have access to the other facilities at the club. I can't think of a better day out.
Cleopatra's Royal Bath is £150 for 90 minutes. See all the treatments and book here http://www.thechelseaclub.com/antara-spa/welcome/
