BEST FOR: BEING AT THE CENTRE OF THINGS

The Balmoral, Edinburgh

reviewed by Elin Tough

When I read that The Balmoral was 'close to Edinburgh's attractions', I didn't realise it meant it quite so literally. Located slap bang at the top of Princes Street, the shopping hub of the city, I can't believe my luck when I spot the castle to my right and Topshop directly opposite! The hotel itself is classy and luxurious, and my room - or should I say suite - is amazing, with two bathrooms, a lounge, plasma TV, and separate bedroom. I feel like a princess in my little Scottish tower of luxury. But despite the lure of the sofa, TV and minibar, I drag myself out through the door to explore the spa. I opt for the signature treatment - a Kamala hot herbal therapy, a 90-minute hot poultice body massage and Thai facial. Pure bliss! My skin looks absolutely fabulous afterwards. I wonder whether a dip in the pool will undo all the good work. I take my chances and leave feeling totally relaxed. It's a bit of a shock to step out into the hustle and bustle of Edinburgh, but with my back un-knotted and stress and tension lifted, I'm fully equipped to face the crowds. Finally, with tourist attractions admired and souvenirs bought, I head back to the hotel to slump contentedly on to my sofa, fire up the plasma and peruse the extensive room service menu. Do weekend breaks get much better than this?
