Mandie Gower ditches week-day tension with a minibreak at Feversham Arms Hotel and Verbena Spa
Feeling strung out, I arrive at the hotel concerned that any plinky-plonk spa music and hard-to-hear hushed voices will simply grate on my already frazzled nerves (or just give me the giggles) but, happily, Feversham is proof that zen doesn't only come courtesy of cool glass, chrome and aloof looking orchids. This country-luxe retreat on the edge of the Yorkshire moors channels a relaxed, thoroughly English vibe– teeming with squishy sofas, warm lighting, and enough cosy blankets and well-stocked bookshelves to make curling up an almost involuntary reaction.
Bedrooms are beautifully designed to feel both homely and boutique, and while it's certainly bijou compared to some spas, that's perhaps part of the magic.
My sister and I find a suitable sofa, order afternoon tea – this is Yorkshire, after all! – and tuck our toes under a tartan blanket, and it's as if we're alone in our very own country hideaway, albeit one with super-indulgent treatments on demand and a five-course tasting menu for dinner every night.
Once we've mentally switched down a gear and erased life's dramas from our faces (if tired eyes are your giveaway, the Miracle Eyes treatment is a must), there’s the exhilaration of a few lengths in the outside pool, followed by a glass of champagne in the candle-lit hot tub, to tease out any lingering physical stress - and give the best night's sleep I’ve had in months.
