Ski safe
Safety never takes a holiday, so here's our top kit and tips to keep you safe this winter
The 10 FIS (International Ski Federation) Rules of Conduct:
- Respect on the slopes: Don't endanger others when you ski.
- Control: Adapt to your ski ability and mountain conditions. Think about how and how fast you are skiing.
- Choice of route: Make sure you leave enough space in front of you, as the skier or snowboarder ahead of you has priority.
- Overtaking: If you do need to overtake a skier or boarder who's slower than you, make sure you leave lots of space.
- Entering and starting: As you enter a pisted run, check the coast is clear by looking up and down the mountain every time.
- Stopping: Don't stop in the middle of the piste - only stop at the edge or where you can easily be seen.
- Climbing: If you have to climb up or down, always keep to the side of the piste.
- Signs: They are for your own safety, so make sure you obey all signs and markings.
- Assistance: Help and alert the rescue service and in the case of any accident.
- Identification: Exchange names and addresses with both witnesses and those involved in an accident.
Zest says: While technology means there are some great low-price goggles and gloves around, with a helmet you really get what you pay for. Around 87% of ski and snowboarding-related deaths stem from head injuries. Reduce your risk of head injury by a third with one of these helmets...
