1. FUEL UP: 'Start with a breakfast of porridge followed by natural yoghurt and berries - perfect slow-release energy,' says Jemma.

2. FIND A FRIEND: 'Having someone to chat to staves off boredom, so try racing with a friend. I always tackle long runs with my boyfriend.'

3. PREPARE WELL: 'Get your kit ready the night before and then relax. I used to worry about competition, but now I focus on my own progress instead.'
