Zumba wonder: Matthew Cutler

You might know Matthew Cutler from Strictly Come Dancing - a regular on the show, he won partnering Alesha Dixon in 2007. He also teaches Zumba classes and presents Zumba on QVC, demonstrating moves and promoting his package of DVDs.

Matthew Cutler, who takes Zumba classes at least four times a week, tells us why he's so keen on the high-energy dance fitness technique.

'I started teaching Zumba because I think it is a great way to get into shape, it is so much more enjoyable I find then going to the gym. It is the only thing that I have managed to stick to doing and I still love doing the workout.

'We have people in our Zumba classes who have lost lots of weight and are fitter and stronger and that gives me a lot of satisfaction seeing that happen. One lady has lost four stone since coming to our classes. '

Matthew explains, 'It is very different to any other fitness programme I have tried before, mainly because it doesn't feel like a fitness programme, it feels like you are just dancing for an hour. Zumba has a different type of atmosphere - much more like a party, people make lots of noise during the class, they don't mind if they go wrong a little bit. It feels more relaxed than other fitness classes but still works so it's a perfect combination. '

So what can you expect if you're new to Zumba?

Matt hew says, 'I can guarantee that you will have fun and it will not feel like any other fitness class you have been to before. It has lots of different moves to try and learn, lots of different songs with different rhythms, some fast some slow. The class will just seem to fly by. However, at the end you will be hot, sweaty and feel you have had a great workout.'

An average Zumba class consists of between eight and 11 dances, including a warm-up at the beginning and a cool-down at the end. Every class should have a good variety of dances and rhythms, like 2 salsas, 2 merengues, 2 cumbia and so on. Zumba is about the mix of dances and dance moves unlike, for example, a salsa class.

Says Matthew, 'The term exercise in disguise is perfect to sum up Zumba.'
