Denise Johns, 33, will be representing Britain in the beach volleyball competition at London 2012 along with her team mate Lucy Boulton. She grew up in the US and has played volleyball since she was 10 years old.

Spending so much time outside must do wonders for her vitamin D levels, but does have its downside. Denise says, 'Being outside for our job is a perk, but it can also be really damaging to our skin. I wear an SPF product every day but it doesn't always feel like enough.

'I apply Clinique Face Cream SPF30 (£16) 20 minutes before a game so I feel protected throughout.

'Playing out in the sun so much puts me at risk of hyperpigmentation, so I'm a big fan of Clinique Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector (£39). It's as effective at restoring an even skin tone as a prescription drug, which I'd really prefer not to use.

'As an added benefit, the texture feels lovely on my skin. It's definitely my essential luxury.'

As for hair: Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil (£19) gets the thumbs up. 'Does exactly what it says on the tin - protects my hair while I'm playing,' says Denise.
