Learn to have a constructive argumnet

If you're sick of shouting and want to get issues resolved, psychologist and life coach Emma Kenny's five-point plan is the way to improve your technique in the art of argument.

  1. Agree together what the core problem is, then negotiate the constructive steps you need to take to deal with it.
  2. See it as a negotiation, not conflict; a way to enhance closeness, not destroy it.
  3. Avoid criticism and personal attacks.
  4. Be honest and open. Voice your anxieties and concerns, and listen to theirs without judging or dismissing them.
  5. Focus on the here and now. Leave old grievances and resentments in the past, so they don't stop you seeing today's situation clearly.
