5 ways to reduce your risk of breast cancer
There's no guaranteed way to avoid breast cancer, but these simple lifestyle changes can help reduce your chances of getting it
1. Download the free iPhone app ibreastcheck (apple.com/itunes)
'The simple videos teach you how to check your breasts, plus you can set reminders for regular checks, and follow a lifestyle quiz to work out your risk,' says Dr Rachel Greig from Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

2. Cut down on post-work wine sessions
'Regular drinking does increase your risk of breast cancer,' warns Dr Greig. 'About 11% of women who don't drink will develop breast cancer, but this rises to 17% for women who have four units a day (the equivalent of two 175ml glasses of wine).'

3. Stay in shape
'Being overweight affects your hormones, and raised oestrogen levels are a risk factor,' says Dr Greig.
A recent study by Cancer Research UK found that obesity was the single biggest influence on older women developing the most common types of breast cancer, so hit the gym regularly and ensure you eat a healthy, balanced diet.

4. Get a contraception check-up
'The pill can increase your risk of developing breast cancer, but it's quite a small risk which disappears when you stop taking it,' says Dr Greig. If you're worried, see your GP to discuss your options and put your mind at rest.

5. Make a promise to try and breastfeed
'The longer you breastfeed, the more protection you get,' says Dr Greig. A study published in The Lancet found your risk is reduced by 4% over 12 months of breast-feeding. If you need help, visit our sister site Babyexpert.com for advice.
