Shape up and live longer

Just 15 minutes of exercise a day can help you live longer, researchers have proved.

A Taiwanese study of more than 400,000 people over eight years found that even small amounts of regular exercise reap big fitness benefits.

They concluded that an average of 92 minutes of exercise a week led to:

  1. A 14% reduced risk of early death
  2. Life expectancy being increased by three years
  3. A 10% reduced risk of cancer.

AND for every 15 minutes' extra exercise a week,

  • the risk of early death was cut by 4%
  • the risk of death from cancer was cut by 1%.

I agree that us human beings need to exercise every day. We are the same as any animal and our bodies benefit from being kept in tip top condition. We did not evolve for being sedentry, the opposite in fact, and it is only relatively recently in the history of our existence that we have become increasingly inactive.
I also wonder what population the Tiawanese study looked at and the age group. Assuming it is of the Tiawanese population then I wonder if they are a healthier lot than people on average in the UK and so maybe these results are skewed. I think that perhaps the diet would be healthier so the incidences of cancers might be lower than in the West.
Whatever the differences, there is ample evidence to illustrate the fact that exercise is necessary for everyone and is beneficial.
