Vibrate your way to better bike fitness

Even Tour de France cyclists were using the powerBIKE to boost their performance in this year's race

Like powerPLATES, but prefer cycle training? Look out for the new powerBIKE, coming soon to a gym near you.

The powerBIKE is the first bike to incorporate vibration training, leading to a more challenging workout.

As with powerPLATES, cycle vibration training activates the stretch and reflex in your muscles, meaning your body is getting more of a workout with every revolution of the pedals.

Olympic champion Rebecca Romero is already using the powerBIKE to enhance her training, as is the Dutch professional cycling team Rabobank.

Trials are ongoing, but early research conducted by the University of Greenwich has found that the addition of vibration during a cycling workout causes a significant increase in activity for the primary cycling muscles.

Vibration training is already a tried and tested means of increasing muscle strength and power, with more than a decade of scientific research.

So what's it like to use? Well, you power the bike, so it goes at whatever speed your leg muscles can cope with. It feels much like riding on a heavily cobbled road. As with a normal exercise bike, you can set the resistance, and the vibrations travel through the handlebars as well as the pedals so have benefits for your arms too. And yes, you can always switch off the vibrations if things are getting a bit much.
