Sports bra

  • An incredible 80% of us wear the wrong size sports bra, so get properly fitted instore by an expert.
  • Even those with small breasts need a sports bra. Research has found wearing a sports bra can reduce movement when you're running by a very similar amount for both AA cups and G cups - 53% and 55% respectively.
  • Many new-generation sports bras have different designs to make them more comfortable, or new technology in the fabric to keep you cool.

Classic vest

There are so many great styles and colours to choose from that are practical, look good and won't cost the earth. Sports vests are different from fashion tops because their fabric is sweat-wicking, ensuring your run or workout is as comfortable as possible, preventing chafing, and enabling you to work out for longer as a result.

While you don't need anything fancy, consider your body shape before buying:

  • Apple shapes should go for looser fits
  • Pear shapes should choose longer tops
  • Petite runners can choose a close-fitting style

Running tights

  • Look for a high percentage of Lycra, as this will give your leggings some essential stretch. A Lycra/polyester blend will also wick away sweat as you run.
  • Always try on your tights in-store to check their fit. You want them to feel snug but not like they are cutting off your circulation.
  • If you become a regular runner, consider upgrading to compresion tights. Athletes love them as they help prevent the build-up of lactic acid when you exercise. They also boost circulation, which gives more power to your muscles.

Trainers

  • Always get a professional fitting before you buy trainers. Make sure you ask plenty of questions to find out what all the special features do and how they can help your running.
  • Buy the right trainer for the surfaces and conditions you run on and in - do you favour grass and tracks, pavements or the treadmill?
  • Replace your trainers regularly: after every 500 miles. That's once every six months if you average 20 miles a week, but remember road running can wear out your shoes faster than grass or tracks. Running in worn-out shoes is one of the main causes of injury, so beware.
