That's a long time to be sitting on a hard, narrow seat, leaning forward with my weight on my arms. Time to think about off-the-bike moves that can help make my cycle challenge less painful.

My favourite PT Jarod Chapman has some ideas on complementing my training with off-cycle work to help build glutes (the muscles around your bum), arms and core. All should help improve my cycling. Strength and conditioning work will also help prevent injuries.

I head down to his studio (by bike, obvs: 5.43 miles; av speed 11mph) for advice.

His pearls of wisdom include:

1. Focus on keeping knees tucked in when cycling. This pushes more effort down onto the pedals and is therefore more efficient. Many cyclists cycle with their legs splayed too wide, knees pointing outwards, Jarod observes.

2. Putting in the bike hours is great for my endurance, but mat work will help build the muscles that make me a better, faster cyclist.

3. Throw in some cross training. Running is my exercise of choice, so I plan to run at lunchtime on work days when I can't logistically fit in any bike miles.

4. Use Slendertone Bottom for 20 minutes at least three times a week. This is an effortless muscle stimulator that will both tone and work my glutes. Sounds good: I'm already a massive fan of Slendertone Abs (yes, it really works. I have the stomach muscles to prove it), so am willing to be convinced that its butt-boosting cousin is as effective.

I'll let you know how I get on!

I'm training for the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey100 cycle event

Read my previous blog entry: The cycle commute

Related Content

Hot now: cycling sportives for women

        I'm cycling a 100-mile sportive.

            Close House

Looking out of the cosy drawing room of Close House at the sun setting across the Tyne valley, it’s hard to believe that just 20 minutes ago I was crawling through traffic in Newcastle city centre. But sinking into a comfy armchair with a cocktail in hand, it’s very easy to let the cares of the city melt away.

There’s been a house on this site since the 13th Century, but the current building dates from 1779 and it’s been beautifully restored with luxurious fabrics and warm, understated colours. I’m staying in the converted stables, a set of suites that carry through the old-world luxury of the main house, with every modern convenience including iPod dock, under-floor heating in the (massive) bathroom, wide-screen TVs, and (my favourite!) Molton Brown bath products. It’s like being cocooned in a haven of delicious-smelling peace. In fact, the only thing that can tempt me to leave my room tonight is the promise of dinner in the hotel’s Argent D’Or restaurant, (and another chance to savour the beauty of the main house!). My meal of king prawns, pork loin (I’m salivating even now at the thoughts of the Dauphinoise potatoes), and a selection of local cheeses, is the ultimate antidote to my disappointing sandwich lunch on the train here. I feel utterly spoiled and relaxed – not to mention pretty full – but still manage to sample a lychee cocktail, invented just hours before by the expert bar staff.

            Luxury suite

The culinary delights don’t end there, and heading back across the grounds to my suite (in a golf buggy!) there’s another pleasant surprise – my bed’s been turned down and the breakfast-in-bed menu is waiting for me. I just about manage to fill out what I want and hang it on the door before collapsing into the 10-foot-wide (well, that’s how big it seems) bed, and falling asleep. It’s a tough life.

Next morning, the breakfast doesn’t disappoint and sets me up nicely to check out the golfing facilities Close House is best known for. Since the Championship Lee Westwood Colt course opened in 2011, this has become a major destination for golf pros, enthusiastic amateurs and beginners alike. As a total novice (not counting a few disastrous outings as a 12-year-old on my local course), I head straight for a lesson with the club’s head PGA professional Jonathan Lupton. From simple body measurements to high-tech computer tracking of your swing – this place is fully kitted out to find the perfect club for you, and help you use it too. After just a few attempts under Jonathan’s expert guidance, I’ve even managed to hit the ball – and I’m itching to get out on the (very impressive) driving range. I’ve always thought of golf as a middle-aged man’s game, but the atmosphere of this club is nothing but welcoming – the high number of female members and the kids' camps are proof of this. After an hour of hitting balls my arms and back are feeling it, and my preconception of golf as an ‘easy’ sport has been proven wrong.

            Perfecting my swing!

Before I leave, there's just time for lunch at the No.19 Clubhouse – the perfect place to recharge after a game and take in the stunning views of the grounds. Checking out of Close House, I feel relaxed, rejuvenated – and more than a little jealous of anyone staying for a second night.

Related Content

Take a country house spa break

        Suits you spas

        Top 10 spa minibreaks

But no matter which moniker you know it by, the principle is the same - and surprisingly simple: eat normally for five days a week, and then fast for two. The weight loss regime, which requires restricting food intake to 500 calories on fasting days, is being hailed as the biggest thing since the Atkins Diet, and better still, early indications suggest that it's safe - and works!

Low calorie snack ideas

Note: Diets should never be undertaken without seeking medical advice to ensure the programme is safe and suitable for the individual

The 2 Day Diet Cookbook
By Dr Michelle Harvie & Prof Tony Howell

The 2 Day Diet Cookbook is authored by two breast cancer specialists, Dr Michelle Harvie and Prof Tony Howell, who have spent much of their medical careers researching how to lose weight and keep it off as part of their treatment and prevention practises (Harvie has 17 years of research experience in the field of diet; Howell 30 in breast cancer treatment and oncology). The clinical weight behind this book lends it a level of clout, and as a result, it's clear and confident in its guidance, breaking the diet into five simple, unintimidating stages.

2 Day Diet provides recipes for your fasting days in the form of breakfasts, soups, salads and packed lunches, 30-minute meals, plus quick and easy vegetarian mains. It also caters for non-restricted days, and the evidence presented by the authors (such as the statistic that losing as little as 11 pounds can cut the risk of breast cancer by 25-40%) are great prompts to commit to cooking the dishes.

Where the book excels are in its easy-to-read reference tables: there's a full recipe comparison chart, separate plans for weight loss and maintenance, and comprehensive meal planners. Each individual recipe also has its own clearly presented table giving a nutritional breakdown, and many are photographed, to give dieters a clear and appetizing idea of what they're in for.

Price: £12.99 (Vermillion)

The Fast Diet Recipe Book

By Mimi Spencer with Dr Sarah Schenker

'I am a mother and a wife and a cook like you, wheeling my trolley around the supermarket, desperate for inspiration about what to cook tonight,' explains co-author and food journalist Mimi Spencer, on what inspired her to write The Fast Diet Recipe Book. She's teamed up with Dr Sarah Schenker, a nutritionist and dietician who provides sports teams with her expertise, and together, they present a stylishly photographed collection of recipes in keeping with the 5:2 fasting diet lifestyle.

Some of Spencer and Schenker's concoctions sound almost dinner-party decadent (White Crab and Chokes, say, or Gravadlax with Quail's Eggs), but all have been carefully devised to balance protein with moderate complex carbohydrates, and all are pleasingly low-calorie.

There are also some simpler, speedier meals, like the No-Potato Niçoise salad - ideal for maintaining an easy to manage, low-fat lifestyle - and the dry rub recipes designed to pep up fast day food add extra flavour.

Price: £14.99 (Short Books)

Low calorie dinner ideas

The 5:2 Cookbook - 100 Recipes for Fasting

By Angela Dowden

Author Angela Dowden is a nutritionist with a degree in Food Science, and her practical, no-fuss approach in The 5:2 Cookbook proves to be extremely useful to readers looking to jump right into a new, healthy lifestyle.

The book dives right into addressing potential queries ('I heard it could affect fertility?') and tackling those common preconceptions associated with any deprivation-based diet, before swiftly introducing the reader to suggested weekly eating plans with full calorie breakdowns.

There's also a comprehensive list of snacks and treats, broken down into 100 calorie and 50 calorie categories, which will give readers a sense of control over everything they consume, and all the recipes are listed in ascending order according to calories, which makes doing the maths effortless and easy for those short of time. Better still, these are weight loss recipes with reasonably simple preparation methods, so tackling them after a long day at work isn't too daunting a prospect.

Price: £7.99 (Octopus Books)

Low calorie breakfast ideas

The Ultimate 5:2 Diet Recipe Book

By Kate Harrison

Author Kate Harrison claims to have lost 11kg in nine months, and maintains that the 5:2 diet has been 'the easiest eating plan I've ever followed.' She also claims that it's 'the simplest, cheapest approach to healthy eating around,' and her conversational style is relatable and encouraging.

The book divides into two parts, breaking down into an introductory section, which answers all the reader's questions about the 5:2 in an accessible, easy-to-read format. The second half is dedicated to recipes and real-life 5:2 dieters' diaries. Many of the profiled dieters are experimental cooks and food bloggers themselves, which adds extra value to the book's content and lends promise to the possibility of maintaining 5:2 as a lifestyle, rather than merely a temporary stint.

The recipes, which range from granola squares to chicken tagines, are designed for day-to-day cooking, and consist of easily obtainable ingredients, so your weekly shop won't become a stressful experience.

Price: £7.99 (Orion Non-Fiction)

Low calorie lunch ideas

Related Content

        Is the Fasting Diet safe?

What to eat on the fasting diet

        What 500 calories looks like

That's an almost 20-mile round trip from Wimbledon to the heart of London's Soho.

I've done it twice so far - and aim to keep it up until the event on August 4, 2013.

Best time so far: 40:32 over 9.34 miles. Av speed: 13.8mph

Time and distance vary according to route - the way home appears to be slightly further - and the app I use to record it. I've had a few running simultaneously (look out for my best cycling apps review coming one day soon) to compare performance and usability, and they all record slightly different distances and times.

I know a lot of people hate cycling in traffic or simply find the thought of it terrifying. It doesn't faze me, and in many of the streets I'm cycling, traffic is generally at a standstill so it's more a question of choosing the most efficient path between stationary vehicles than being cut up by speeding cars.

I cycle assertively but defensively, don't jump red lights, and never squeeze down the inside of lorries or buses for fear that they could make a left turn without warning. This is a common cause of cyclist fatalities in the capital: getting squished beneath the wheels of a truck as it turns a corner.

Improve your safety on two wheels: learn to cycle smart

Things I've learned on my cycle commute:

1. Indicating you're going to turn by sticking your arm out horizontally, like you were taught on your bike proficiency test, is seriously uncool. A casual gesture of the arm, as if going for a mid-level 'High Five' is the streetwise way to do it.

2. Keep your mobile in a handy pocket or pouch - you need easy access to press STOP on your cycle app the moment you get to your destination for the chance of a PB.

3. Use sunglasses even on dull days to keep fumes out of your eyes

4. Cycling is a mental as well as a physical workout. The key to staying safe on a bike is being alert at all times to possible risks: motorists, parked cars, pedestrians, potholes, other cyclists. Exhausting!

5. Middle aged men in Lycra are generally seriously fast. And wear very impressive kit. Want! (The kit, not the MAMIL.)

I'm training for the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey100 cycle event

Read my previous blog entry: My first wet ride

Related Content

Hot now: cycling sportives for women

I'm cycling a 100-mile sportive. However, one challenge vegetarians and vegans often face is how to incorporate key nutrients into their diet that are commonly found in meat and fish.

Jessica Andersson, a mother, nutritional therapist, experienced chef and founder of Jessica's Recipe Bag, explains, 'the important thing to consider if you are a vegetarian is to make sure you have plenty of protein, iron and essential fats such as Omega 3 in your diet.'

Why women are eating more protein

The good news is that these nutrients - usually consumed in meat and fish - can easily be derived from vegetarian-friendly alternatives. 'There are a great variety of nutrient-rich foods available for vegetarians which will provide their daily intake of essential nutrients,' Jessica says. A great plant-based protein substitute is soya beans: 150g give you about 50% of your required daily intake (45g). Another vegetarian wonder food? Tofu, which Jessica explains is 'high in protein, iron, calcium, B12 and magnesium.'

Jessica's Tofu Stir-Fry recipe

So what five core rules should vegetarians live by to ensure they get the correction nutritional balance from their day-to-day diet?

1. Have a protein-rich meal at least twice a day
'For breakfast, have poached eggs on whole-meal toast, or porridge oats with seeds and nuts,' advises Jessica. 'Pulses, nut and soya are especially high in protein.'

Tasty, vegetarian and high in protein...

2. Eat foods that contain plenty of Vitamin C
'Iron absorption is increased in the presence of Vitamin C,' Jessica explains. Veggies can get their Vitamin C boost from citrus fruits, berries, broccoli, watercress, peppers, green beans and kiwis.

20 reasons to eat more berries

3. Eat at least two servings of food containing high levels of iron
'Low iron can lead to anaemia,' warns Jessica. To avoid low iron levels, she advises eating at least two servings of food-types high in the mineral: spinach, lentils, kidney beans, watercress, kale and eggs are all great options.

5 reasons to eat more spinach

4. Vegans should eat plenty of food containing B12
'B12 is essential for the formation of healthy red blood cells, and is required for the nervous system,' Jessica explains. However, vegetarians and vegans are often lacking the vitamin because B12 is found in meat, fish and eggs. Fortified cereals and soya beans are good alternative sources for non-meat eaters.

Eat a week of superhero vegetables

5. Include essential fats in your diet
Essential fats are key to overall health, but are often associated with fish. For vegetarians, these oils can mostly be found in chia, flax, sunflower, pumpkin and sesame seeds, as well as nuts - especially walnuts.

Get to know good fats

Related Content

        The 'five a day' way

5 'healthy' foods a nutritionist would NEVER eat

        Learn to eat less meat

A typical spring clean can burn up to 3,655 calories every year – which amounts to almost a quarter of a million calories over a lifetime (or the equivalent of 783 bacon butties), according to research by PromotionalCodes.org.uk.

Discover 6 hidden calorie traps

The study of 40 home owners monitoring their cleaning and tidying habits over the spring overhaul period, shows that the average pre-summer spruce lasts approximately 16 hours 20 minutes over a course of four days. Each person burned more than the typical 2,500 - 3,500 calories used up running a marathon.

4 easy ways to drop 200 calories

So which tasks give the best calorie burn? The most strenuous spring cleaning exercise proved to be emptying, cleaning and repacking cupboards, using up around 952 calories over a four-hour period. The most gentle? Turning mattresses and making beds, which expends only 136 calories per hour - though dusting, at 170 calories per hour, comes a close second.

Check your calorie burn with our interactive calculator

Related Content

        How to survive a marathon

        Could you run a marathon?

        Gym classes: fast workouts
