Before you buy:
Find a good bike shop
'It's really important that you speak to someone who will not only advise you on the right bike, but will also be happy for you to return if you have any questions or problems with your bike,' says Richard Sanders, cycle technical officer at the sustainable transport charity, Sustrans.
Make sure it fits
'You wouldn't buy a pair of shoes without trying them on. Spend some time trying out and researching bikes that fit your size. You don't want to be holding the handle bars with the tips of your fingers. A female-specific frame is most important with road and mountain bikes, while commuter and cruiser-style bikes tend to be more upright, so a smaller frame isn't always necessary.'
