Q. MY BIG TOENAIL HAS GONE YELLOW - A DEFINITE NO-NO FOR STRAPPY SANDALS. I NEED HELP FAST! Clare, 31, by email
A. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but whatever treatment you choose, your toenail won't get better overnight - you're looking at weeks. So take action now if you want to slip into sandals before summer's out. First, try Curanail, a treatment from the chemist that you 'paint' on. If there's no improvement after four to six weeks, see your GP. An oral anti-fungal drug is likely to be your next step. As the drug is broken down in the liver, you'll need a blood test to check your liver is healthy first and, once you're on the pills, it can take three months to see results. I'd recommend taking a picture of your nail now and every three weeks throughout your treatment so you can see if you're making progress. It's not the quick flip-flop fix you're looking for, but your toenail will eventually get better.
