Q. I KEEP GETTING CYSTITIS, AND I'M FED UP OF TAKING ANTIBIOTICS. HOW CAN I BREAK THIS CYCLE? Anita, 34, Coventry
You really must ask your doctor for a formal urine test next time cystitis strikes. Also, take a chlamydia test as 'cystitis' symptoms can be the sign of a chlamydia infection. Your GP can also run a baseline blood test for diabetes, kidney function and general wellbeing to rule out underlying problems. I know you want to avoid antibiotics but your doctor may try to break the cycle with a low-dose antibiotic for six weeks. Always follow the antibiotic instructions, as missing doses will result in resistance in the future. You can also ease the antibiotic burden on your body by taking probiotics at the same time. Try to boost your immune system by getting enough B vitamins and vitamin C when cystitis hits again. Eat healthily, drink lots of water and have plenty of early nights - all strategies that will prime your system to fight against it.
