Q: I'VE COME OFF THE PILL AND NOW I'VE GOT SPOTS AT 32. HELP! Sandra Kelly, Hull

A: Don't panic, adult acne is common and your body could be adjusting to hormonal changes post-Pill. I'd suggest over-the counter washes and lotions with benzoyl peroxide as this anti-inflammatory kills bacteria and unblocks pores. If this doesn't work, your GP can prescribe antibiotics or stronger creams that are available only on prescription. The contraceptive pills Yasmin or Dianette may also be an option as they are skin friendly. If your spots are sore and last a long time, you can be referred to a dermatologist, who may prescribe Roaccutane. This slows the production of sebum, but you'll need to be monitored carefully as it can cause side effects and can take up to six weeks to show even the smallest effect. You must also take some form of prescription contraceptive while on Roaccutane and for at least one month afterwards as it can cause birth defects.

Hi, I started having acne at seventeen and a half.  Since then I have taken Oxytetracycline one tablet twice a day.  I have only come off it when trying to become pregnant and whilst pregnant, and to give my body a rest from its effects, which are not bad in my case.  I have tried Dianette, but it didn't work for me and I didn't like the weight gain, which probably doesn't happen with everyone.

When I changed doctors they have commented that I don't have acne!  Of course not, I am on medication.  They take me off it and in a few weeks my face is covered in terrible sore spots reaching from around my nose, mouth, chin, cheeks and even round my eyes and that is very sore.  My back breaks out and I get spots on my chest, shoulders and chest.  Back on the medication I improve dramatically.  This might help you make your decision on what to do.

 I should say, I am now 54.

Hey I had adult acne for about 12 years, I tried all the creams, antibiotics , contraceptive pills the doctors could throw at me to no avail It wasn't until I tried a high dose of vitamin B5 that I started to see a difference, that being that my skin got a lot clearer very quickly. But as I was taking up to about 10g B5 everyday I worried about the long term effects!
It wasn't until I was put on a low dose of prozac that my skin has actually cleared completely, which obviously makes me think that the cause was something emotional rather than diet (I've always eaten healthily) or just using the wrong skincare products!
It's amazing what can cause diseases really isn't it!

I am in desperate need of help, i am 31, with 3 children, for as long as i can remember i always had the odd spot from time to time. For the last year and a half i keep having massive breakouts all around my top lip and chin area, not a day goes by where i havent got a fresh spot. Due to the amount of spots im getting it as left terrible scarring in that area which looks dreadful, i dont consider myself as having any more than the normal day to day stresses of life so i cant say is down to that, i dont consider myself to be overweight and eat a very healthy diet and attend fitness classes 4 times a week, some 1 please help as this is taking over my life :-(
